I asked my instagram community how they like vegan travel food posts organized. The answers were divided. Half of them wanted the restaurants by type of meal. The other half wanted them by location. So, I’m trying something new.
I’m listing all the vegan-friendly spots by location first. Then, I’m listing them by meal type. Now, hopefully, everyone is seeing the information in a way that they prefer.
I took my trip to Maui in February 2025, so if you’re reading this after that, please double check that places are still open before going. I tried to go to 2 places while I was there that google and yelp said were there, but they had closed. There are always places closing and opening so there’s a chance something in this list may be outdated information by the time you read it.
My vegan Hawaii Yelp collection is usually up to date if you want to see all the vegan friendly spots in a map view.
My Three Favorite Spots for Vegan Food in Maui
If you’re one of those people who hops from island to island when you’re in Hawaii, you might only be in Maui for a few meals. Here are my favorite spots that are not to be missed.
- Hempy’s Shake and Wake
- Tabay’s Mindful Kitchen
- A`A Roots

Vegan Food in Northwest Maui
A`A Roots
A`A Roots is an all-vegan breakfast and lunch spot in Lahaina. They have a fairly healthy menu, and I love their use of edible flowers. I ordered a vegan caesar salad, and it came with the prettiest pinkish-lilac edible flowers!

This is only half of the menu. They also have soup, smoothies, smoothie bowls, juices, and coffee. This restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. It’s located in a plaza with a coffee shop where you can buy whole bean Kona coffee to bring home as souvenirs. The coffee shop also has postcards, so you can sit outside and write postcards while you eat your lunch.
They’re open 8am-3:30pm every day, except Wednesdays.
Location: Lahaina (northwest Maui)
Choice Health Bar
Choice Health Bar is an almost all vegan smoothie spot that’s only open for breakfast/lunch. Make sure when you order that your item doesn’t have honey in it, and it will be vegan. There are 2 locations in Maui, and I went to both.

This location in Lahaina is in an outdoor mall (top left picture above). Google maps might try to take you to a parking lot where you have to pay to park. However, if you drive further to the next parking lot, you can avoid paying.
I ordered the POW hana because it was lavender and had a lot of protein. It was delicious.
The Lahaina location is open 7:30am-4pm everyday, so it’s a perfect spot to get something before you go whale watching.
Location: Lahaina (northwest Maui)
Ultimate Whale Watch
Okay, okay, I know this isn’t vegan food. I swear I’m not trying to be sneaky. And I promise I’m not sponsored by them.
If you are planning to go whale watching while you’re in Maui, February is a great time to see BABY WHALES! And when I say baby whales, I’m talking whales the size of a car. So wild!

I chose Ultimate Whale Watch because my friend Skott used to have a vegan whale watching company in Boston. He recommended this place, and I trust him with this decision. However, if you’re thinking, I don’t know this Skott character…I’ll do my own research, thank you very much, then here are some things for you to look for.
- How strictly does the organization enforce the “100 yards” policy with whale encounters? Legally, boats have to keep that far away from whales (unless the whales come to you.
- How small is the boat? Smaller boats with experienced captains make less noise and tend to be less intrusive than huge diesel whale watching ships. (Smaller boats tend to be more expensive, but it’s always worth it.)
Location: Lahaina (northwest Maui)
Ma’alaeah General Store
Ma’alaeah General Store in Ma’alaeah has a deli inside where they serve food until 5:30pm everyday. There are bathrooms across the street that you can use while you wait for your food to be prepared. Most of the items are not vegan, but there is a completely separate vegan menu.
Even though you’re ordering off the vegan menu and you’re saying vegan to the old man taking your order, he might still make a mistake. I would just reiterate at the end of your order that everything he typed in was vegan. I ordered the deconstructed tofu poke. It was served over white rice (because the man taking our order didn’t give me the choice of brown or white). So, if you prefer brown rice, make sure you mention it when you order.
Some gal who had ordered tofu scramble took our order by mistake and then left. So, when they tried to bring us her tofu scramble, they realized what had happened. They not only remade our tofu poke, but they also gave us her tofu scramble for free! What excellent customer service from the gals in the kitchen.

It’s open from 6am-5:30pm every day.
Location: Ma’alaeah (northwest Maui)
Vegan Food on Maui’s North Shore
Hempy’s Shake and Wake
Hempy’s Shake and Wake is a vegan spot located pretty close to Kahului in Wailuku. The owner does everything so it does take a little bit for your food to be made, but it’s worth the wait! The sushi she made me was SO GOOD, even though it had wasabi on it (I hate wasabi). That’s how good it was! I ate it all even with wasabi! Who even am I?!
We also ordered a mango smoothie that was super thick, just like I think all shakes and smoothies should be.
Hempy’s is open 11am-5pm Monday through Friday.
Location: Wailuku (north Maui)
Tabay’s Mindful Kitchen
Tabay’s Mindful Kitchen is a food truck parked in the food truck park across the street from Costco in Kahului. If you’re flying in or out of Kahului (which you should because the airport is super cute and vintage looking), this spot is very conveniently located.
This was the only place (besides Down to Earth) where we ate twice. Mainly, the mom of the owner just made us feel so welcome that we wanted to support her. But also because the menu is vast, and there were still things we wanted to try.

The first time we came, we got chimichanga and a burger. I also ordered a vegan snickers, because I thought they were made locally. Sadly, I discovered that they were the ones from the company formerly known as Sweet Hazel. (If you want to know more about that debacle and why I don’t support them anymore, message me.) Oh, and we tried the soft serve.
The second time we came, we ordered the chicken sandwich and another burger. I can’t share the picture because we wolfed it down before I had a chance to get a good pic (oink). The food truck park has ample seating and much of it is under one of those patio sun shade tarp thingies. It provides shade from the sun or keeps you dry in the rain (hey, don’t blame me for the unpredictable weather in Maui).
They’re open from 11am-8pm every day.
Location: Kahului (north Maui)
Down to Earth
If you’ve ever been to Hawaii before, you’ve likely been to one of the Down to Earth locations. They are a health food store that has a few locations. The prices are quite high, but they have a HUGE selection of vegan food. They have a hot bar like most large health food stores and co-ops do, but this one is more vegan than not! We might have chosen to stay in Kahului just because of the proximity to Down to Earth. (I’ve been vegan for 25 years, so I still have this idea ingrained in me that I might starve, haha.)
The deli section has a menu at the deli where they can make you vegan things fresh. But they also have grab and go items in the refrigerated case below the menu. These grab and go items are great for days you’re planning to take the road to Hana. That road is basically a long road of nothingness, so you’ll want to be well stocked. The grab and go are things like vegan spam musubi and sandwiches.
Across the aisle from the deli, is the long hot bar/salad bar. The salad bar has the usual salad bar items you’d expect to find, except it has nutritional yeast at the end and vegan ranch dressing as one of the salad dressings! On the other side of the salad bar, things start to get interesting. There are some prepared salads that are vegan like 2 kinds of kale salad, 2 kinds of vegan potato salad, and there’s a vegan macaroni salad!

One end of the hot bar has 3 vegan soups, and they’re all vegan. I didn’t try these because Hawaii is basically always hot, so it’s not really what I would call soup weather. The other end of the hot bar has 3 types of cooked grains, so you can start making yourself a grain bowl. We got the brown rice one day and topped it with some of the yummy vegan prepared foods from the hot bar. The hot bar had so many great options from basics like roasted squash medleys and stir-fry to vegan enchiladas and vegan lasagna. Across the aisle from the hot bar are a variety of vegan desserts.

They’re open 7am-9pm every day.
Location: Kahului (north Maui)
Momona Bakery and Coffee Shop
Momona coffee shop is conveniently located near the airport and walking distance from a few of the beachfront hotels in Kahului. It’s an old bank that was turned into a coffee shop so it has its own parking lot. The interior is very modern and reminds me of the coffee shops in California. It’s definitely much different from all the other coffee shops in Maui, which have a very earthy, beachy, hippie vibe.
They only had 2 vegan food items. One was a savory empanada, and the other was a sweet muffin. Like most coffee shops in Maui, they offer macadamia nut milk (they call it macnut milk) as one of their many nondairy milk options. The condiment bar had agave and oat milk.
If you’re traveling on a budget, don’t go here. I ordered an iced latte and a muffin, and my total was $18.12 with tip. I get that Maui is an expensive place, but this was ridic. And I’m used to San Francisco prices! It wasn’t any better than anything else I had on the island, so I don’t understand the extortionist pricing.
I didn’t go back, even though it was walking distance from my hotel.

This is a good option if you’re an early riser because they’re open weekdays from 6am-4pm and weekends from 7am-2:30pm.
Location: Kahului (north maui)
Queen Ka’ahumanu Center Farmer’s Market
Queen Ka’ahumanu Center is a shopping mall in Kahului. If you park and walk in, you’ll see the farmer’s market vendors inside. This is a great place to go to get fruit to bring back to your hotel. There’s even a guy who sells you a coconut and puts a straw in it. But then you have to spend the rest of the day trying to figure out how to open the coconut so you can eat the rest.

I got strawberry papayas (spoiler: they don’t taste better than other kinds of papaya). I also got apple bananas, longans, mango, passion fruit, rambutan, and star fruit. Please ignore my makeshift plate of the lid to my ice bucket covered in the bag for my ice bucket.
The internet says they’re open 8am-4pm every day, but I only went on Friday morning, so I can only verify that day.
Location: Kahului (north Maui)
Whole Foods Market
If you’re from the United States, you know about Whole Foods Market. It’s a chain of health food stores that were bought by Amazon. There’s a location in Kahului in an outdoor shopping mall with a TX Maxx, Baskin Robbins and a bunch of other chain stores. I didn’t need to shop here, because we had a rental car, and there was a Down To Earth only a 5 min drive from here.
If I had been in the mood for pizza while I was in Maui, I might have gone to Whole Foods for that. They make vegan pizzas for pretty cheap in the deli area.
They’re open 7am-9pm every day.
Location: Kahului (north Maui)
Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream
If you’re from the United States, you know about Baskin-Robbins. It’s a primarily dairy ice cream shop chain. There’s a location next to the Whole Foods market in Kahului. They only have one vegan flavor, so I wouldn’t go out of your way to go here. But this was walking distance from our hotel (Maui Beach Hotel), so we went on our first day. If you download the app, you get a free scoop!
All the ice cream is vegan, but not all the baked goods, so make sure you read all the labels before purchasing. I ordered the coffee toffee and the chocolate chunk and both were delicious.
They’re open 11am-10pm every day.
Location: Kahului (north Maui)
Mana Foods
Mana Foods is a health food grocery store in Paia that has a ton of vegan friendly food! I was most excited about the insanely huge selection of very affordably-priced desserts in the bakery. This would be a great place to stop for snacks on the way to the road to Hana.

I got a peanut butter chocolate cupcake that was vegan and gluten-free. I really wanted the slice of vegan chocolate peanut butter cake but they said they only cut into a cake if it’s not the last one. I guess they want to have whole cakes available for birthdays, which makes sense.
They’re open 8am-8:30pm every day.
Location: Paia (north Maui)
Choice Health Bar

Choice Health Bar is an almost all vegan smoothie spot that’s only open for breakfast/lunch. Make sure when you order that your item doesn’t have honey in it, and it will be vegan. There are 2 locations in Maui, and I went to both.
This location is in Paia, where there are free parking lots and free street parking. I ordered the chocAloha. It was delicious healthy vegan chocolate shake. The only annoying thing is that they didn’t have a bathroom.
The Paia location is open 9am-4pm everyday.
Location: Paia (north Maui)
Paia Farmer’s Market
The Paia Farmer’s Market is located at the Paia Mill on Sundays. It’s quite small and didn’t have much produce. It’s more of the kind of market you would go to buy handmade items. I found a vegan stand there called Caza Delas and bought a vegan quiche, spanish omelette type of thing. It was a bit dry, but a good snack.
They’re open 8am-1pm every Sunday.
Location: Paia (north Maui)
Maui Kombucha
Maui Kombucha is a kombucha bar in Haiku, near Veg Out. Haiku is a little bit inland from the north coast. It isn’t all vegan, but it does have vegan food options. When I went in Feb 2025, the food menu comprised an eggless salad sandwich, avocado toast, a pesto quinoa wrap, and a fusion bowl. They also had 2 soups: corn chowder and carrot miso ginger soup. The kombucha menu consisted of the following: elderberry ginger, prickly pear, cherry lime, blackberry sage, guava lime, and kona.
We ordered the eggless salad sandwich and guava lime kombucha. There was indoor seating or outdoor, and we chose outdoor. Both items were delicious. I should warn you that they put either wasabi or horseradish in their eggless salad and that is really something they should warn a person. But I did really like the locally made sourdough bread that they use.

They’re open 10am-3pm every day, except Mondays.
Location: Haiku (Maui’s north shore)
Veg Out
Veg Out is a vegetarian restaurant in Haiku, near Maui Kombucha. This was my least favorite place in Maui. I would skip this place unless you are on a budget or on a low-salt diet.
The menu is divided into categories, so I’ll tell which items are vegan, by their category.
- The Mexican category has 4 items. All of them come with cheese by default and can be made vegan by omitting the cheese.
- The entrees category has 3 items that are all vegan.
- The pizza category has 5 pizzas. One of them is vegan, but it has no cheese on it.
- The sandwiches category has 4 sandwiches. Three of the four can be made vegan.
We got the beyond steak sandwich and the bean and rice burrito with tofu. Both were seriously lacking in flavor. I don’t understand how this place has zero avocado when the island literally grows gobs of avocados. I think avocado could have made the burrito a lot better. And salt. And spices. Haha.
The hours are kind of wonky, so I took a picture of them and have included it below.

They’re open 12-7pm everyday except Sundays.
Location: Haiku (north Maui)
Vegan Food on the Road to Hana in North and East Maui
The chances of you being in Maui and not driving the road to Hana are slim. If you like waterfalls, peacocks, lush green landscapes, and serene beach views, you’ll drive the road to Hana. There’s not a lot of food on this road, so I recommend getting snacks and picnic foods from stores before going.
Rainbow Kitchen
Rainbow Kitchen is a vegan food truck focusing on superfoods in Haiku-Pauwela. They’re located in a food truck park right at the start of the Road to Hana called Maliko Country Farms. The area has a super cute courtyard with giant connect four and picnic tables both in the sun and in the shade.

I ordered a cold brew coffee with coconut cream and agave. I couldn’t bring myself to adulterate my coffee with any fancy superfood ingredients. I’m a purist, what can I say? I also got a killer breakfast burrito to share with David. It was the perfect sharing amount.
I love that they use organic ingredients and that they make everything from scratch. The consistency of the housemade steak and eggs wasn’t my favorite, but I’m weird about consistencies. I don’t like spongy seitan at all.
Rainbow Kitchen is open every day, except Monday, from 9am-3pm.
Location: Haiku-Pauwela (north Maui)
Nahiku Roadside Coconut Brittle
There are a lot of fruit stands on the side of the road during the Road to Hana. My advice is to bring cash with you when you travel the road to Hana for this exact reason. Nobody had their venmo QR code out there. They all are on the honor system, and just have containers to insert cash.
The Nahiku Roadside Coconut Brittle is one of those stands. It’s about 6 miles north of Hana on the side of the road. What are the chances that they would have vegan coconut candy on this tiny winding road in the middle of nowhere?! But it’s true. And it’s delicious.
Location: Nahiku (east Maui)
Coconut Glen’s Ice Cream
Coconut Glen’s is a family-owned ice cream stand in Hana, Maui. They even have a local cat. There’s always a line, which is awesome, because they serve vegan ice cream to all the muggle travelers. There was a guy in line behind me who said to his friends, “what’s vegan ice cream?” Haha. His patient companion said, it’s made with coconut milk instead of milk.

All the ice cream is vegan, but not all the baked goods, so make sure you read all the labels before purchasing. I ordered the coffee toffee and the chocolate chunk and both were delicious.
They’re open 10:30am-5:30pm every day.
Location: Hana (east Maui)
Vegan Food on the Southwest Shore of Maui
Earth Aloha Eats
Earth Aloha Eats is right next store to Surfing Monkey Shave Ice. They have a good selection of vegan fast food, as well as healthier vegan food, like bowls. We ordered the fish and chips and the teriyaki bowl. I thought the food here was good.
My only problem with this spot is that after going to Tabay’s Mindful Kitchen and comparing the menus, it seems like half the menu is the same. It’s such a small island and some of the dishes are really specific, so it just strikes me as odd. According to yelp reviews on both establishments, Tabay’s opened first, so I really hope that Earth Aloha Eats didn’t poach the menu from Tabay’s.
They’re open from 11am-8pm every day, except Sunday.
Location: Kihei (southwest Maui)
Maui Ono Donuts
Maui Ono Donuts is an all-vegan donut truck that parks in Kihei. These donuts are seriously phenomenal. Do not order coffee here though. Coffee is not their specialty. What makes these donuts so insanely good, you ask? Let’s discuss it.
One of my favorite donuts in life is old fashioned. The reason I love them is because they have this crisp bite when you bite into them, and then the tender soft center. I don’t know how else to describe the crunchy outer/soft inner situation. But these donuts have that! Not only that, but they make them fresh when you order them!!!! This was the freshest vegan donut I have ever had. They were so good, we went back again on our last day.

They’re open 7am-noon every day.
Location: Kihei (southwest Maui)
Surfing Monkey Shave Ice
Surfing Monkey isn’t an all vegan spot. However, they do have one flavor of ice cream that is vegan. That makes this the only place in Maui that I found where you can order a vegan shave ice with ice cream at the bottom.
They made all their syrups in house with locally grown sugar. You can get up to 3 flavors on each shave ice. I had a hard time choosing, but ended up going with wild cherry, lemon-lime, and blue vanilla. It was so good! It’s also right next door to Earth Aloha Eats so you can get food and then shave ice. Or you can do it backwards like I did.

If you like thrifting, there’s a thrift store in the same plaza. The grocery store in the plaza has organic vegan chocolate covered macadamia nuts. (These were annoyingly hard to find, considering we were in Hawaii).
They’re open 11am-9pm every day.

I didn’t go back, even though it was walking distance from my hotel.

This is a good choice if you’re an early riser because they’re open weekdays from 6am-4pm and weekends from 7am-2:30pm.

Vegan Snacks and Dessert in Maui
This section has a list of spots to find vegan snacks and desserts in Maui.

Coconut Glen’s Ice Cream
Coconut Glen’s is a family-owned ice cream stand just off the Road to Hana.

Location: Road to Hana (east Maui)
Nahiku Roadside Coconut Brittle
There are a lot of fruit stands on the side of the road during the Road to Hana. My advice is to bring cash with you when you travel the road to Hana for this exact reason. Nobody had their venmo QR code out there. They all are on the honor system, and just have containers to insert cash.
The Nahiku Roadside Coconut Brittle is one of those stands. What are the chances that they would have vegan coconut candy on this tiny winding road in the middle of nowhere?! But it’s true. And it’s delicious.
Location: Road to Hana (east Maui)

Location: Kihei (southwest Maui)

Stores with Vegan Food in Maui
This section has a list of stores to find vegan food in Maui.

Farmers Markets in Maui
This section has the 2 farmer’s markets I went to in Maui.

I got strawberry papayas (spoiler: they don’t taste better than other kinds of papaya), apple bananas, longans, mango, passion fruit, rambutan, and star fruit. Please ignore my makeshift plate of the lid to my ice bucket covered in the bag for my ice bucket.
The internet says they’re open 8am-4pm every day, but I only went on Friday morning, so I can only verify that day.
Location: Kahului (north Maui)
Paia Farmer’s Market
The Paia Farmer’s Market is located at the Paia Mill on Sundays. It’s quite small and didn’t have much produce. It’s more of the kind of market you would go to buy handmade items. I found a vegan stand there called Caza Delas and bought a vegan quiche, spanish omelette type of thing. It was a bit dry, but a good snack.
They’re open 8am-1pm every Sunday.
Location: Paia (north Maui)
