This 3-ingredient dog treat recipe is easy, cute, and fun. You only need three plant-based ingredients: canned pumpkin, oats, and peanut butter.

This recipe makes 132 small dog treats.

Knowing how to make your own dog treats from scratch is an invaluable life skill. Once in a while, Chewy will fail to meet its promised delivery date for your normal vegan dog treat subscription. And when that happens, I promise your dog will NOT understand haha.

My dog has a lot of allergies and things can easily upset her little tummy. So, I always use allergen friendly ingredients for her treats. If your dog has an allergy to pumpkin or peanut butter, you can still make these 3-ingredient dog treats. To make them without peanut butter, use the tips in the substitutions section.

Ingredients for Pumpkin Oatmeal Dog Treats

  • 5 ¼ cups (540g) rolled oats
  • 1 ¾ cups (1 can / 15oz / 425g) canned pumpkin
  • 1 cup (255g) peanut butter

How to make Pumpkin Oat Dog Treats

To save time, make round treats instead of cute shapes. Use a number 100 (2 teaspoon) scoop to dollop dough balls onto a rolling mat. Roll them flat with a rolling pin, or flatten them with a fork.

Make oat flour. Add 5 ¼ cups (540g) rolled oats to a clean and dry food processor. Process oats on high speed for a minute, until they resemble a coarse flour. Add them to a mixing bowl.

Make the dough. Add the 1 ¾ cups (1 can / 15oz / 425g) pumpkin puree and 1 cup (255g) peanut butter to the mixing bowl with the oat flour. Mix until you have a uniform dough. I usually end up using my hands for this step, because it’s just easier. (I promise the dogs won’t mind.) If you have a kitchenaid mixer, you can use that. It takes me about 6-7 minutes to make the flour and the dough.

Cut out the treats. Lightly dust a rolling mat with oat flour, if needed. Roll out the dough to ¼” (6mm) thickness. Use a cookie cutter to cut out as many treats as you can. To get a lot of treats, you want to start at the edge and make them as close to each other as possible. Dip your cookie cutter into oat flour in between each cut to keep the dough from sticking to the cookie cutter. If you’re making large treats, like what you would give after being good for their bath time, then use a large cookie cutter. If you’re making training treats, use a small cookie cutter. I used a mini cat cutter because I think it’s funny to feed my dog little cats, haha.

Chill the treats. Once you’ve cut out all the treats, transfer the rolling mat onto a cutting board or a tray. Stick them in the freezer to harden enough to transfer them onto a baking sheet later. If you made small training treats, this shouldn’t take longer than 10-15 minutes.

Prepare for baking. Preheat the oven to 350º F (175º C). Line two baking sheets with silicone rolling mats or parchment paper. Transfer the chilled treats from the rolling mat to the cookie sheets lined with parchment paper. They won’t expand or rise much, so you don’t need to leave much space in between them. I was able to fit about 48 mini cat treats on a quarter sheet pan. It took me 21 minutes to roll the dough, cut out 48 treats, and fill the baking sheet with treats (not counting wait time for chilling the dough).

Bake the treats. Bake the treats for 25-30 minutes at 350º F (175º C).

Repeat. Repeat the same steps with the remaining dough, and continue until you’ve used up all the dough. For me, this recipe made 3 sheets of cookies.

Cool. After removing from the oven, leave them on the baking tray for 5-10 minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack. Then cool them completely before storing them. But you can give one to your pup before they cool completely. Your doggo has probably been drooling the whole time you’ve been making them, so please put pupper out of their misery and let them try one!

Tips for Making Dog Treats with Pumpkin

Tip 1: How to store your dog treats

Since these treats have no preservatives, store them in the fridge for up to 5 days in an airtight container or freeze in a zip tight bag for up to 3 months.

Ingredient Substitutions

  • Pumpkin: If you don’t have canned pumpkin, you can replace it with steamed and pureed sweet potatoes like in my sweet potato dog treats recipe. You can also make these easy dog treats with fresh pumpkin in lieu of canned. Simply steam and puree fresh squash and then use that in place of canned pumpkin.
  • Rolled Oats: I use gluten-free rolled oats because I want my dog treats to be gluten free. If your dog doesn’t have a gluten sensitivity, you can use any rolled oats.
  • Peanut Butter: If your dog is allergic to peanuts, you can replace the 1 cup peanut butter with ½ cup flax egg plus ½ cup mashed banana or ½ cup applesauce.
