For Want Of by Rites of Spring
You were probably expecting to see buffalo chicken AND waffles right? I took this to the next level and stuffed the waffles with the chicken! Courtney and I decided to make waffles that match our hair today. She made sweet waffles and used superfood powders to color hers naturally. I made savory waffles and colored mine with gel colors.

How to Make Vegan Buffalo Chicken Waffles
prep time: 1 min | cook time: 1 min
Melt vegan butter or margarine in the microwave.
Add Frank's RedHot sauce to the melted vegan butter. I like a ratio of 2:1 margarine to hot sauce because I don’t like it to be too spicy. But if you like spicy food, mix them using a 1:1 ratio.

How to Make Vegan Buffalo Chicken Waffles
prep time: 20 min | cook time: 20 min
Blend the first 13 ingredients until smooth. I use a blendtec blender, but you can use whatever blender you have. They are 1 cup (130g) flour, ½ cup (46g) chickpea flour, 1 ½ tablespoons (18g) baking powder, ¼ teaspoon thyme, ¼ teaspoon oregano, ¼ teaspoon basil, ¼ teaspoon paprika, a pinch of pepper, 1 teaspoon (5-6g) salt, 1 teaspoon (2g) onion powder, 1 teaspoon (3g) garlic powder, ½ cup (131g) plain vegan yogurt, and ¾ cup (178g) of water. If you don’t have a blender, just mix it by hand in a large bowl.
(Optional): Color your batter with vegan food coloring if you want your waffles to be colored. I used wilton sky blue gel color and wilton violet gel color for these.
Heat the waffle iron according to your waffle maker’s instructions.
Add 4 ounces (113g) of vegan chicken (cut into small pieces) to your batter and mix them in. These taste great without the chicken too, but you deserve to treat yourself.
Coat both sides of the waffle iron with oil using an oil sprayer or a silicone basting brush dipped in oil.
Pour the batter into the waffle cubbies, and follow your waffle iron instructions for cooking.
Remove the waffles from the waffle iron by shimmying a silicone spatula under one of the edges to help loosen it.
Drizzle with vegan ranch and the buffalo sauce you made earlier.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make these buffalo waffles without the chicken?
These waffles are still amazingly delicious and buffalo chicken falvored if you omit the chicken. Just keep in mind that it will only make 10 heart waffles, instead of 15.
Can I use this buffalo chicken waffles recipe for meal prep?
Waffles are a great meal prep item. They freeze easily in a ziplock bag. When you’re ready to eat them, grab a couple from the freezer or fridge and reheat them in the toaster oven or air fryer.
Ingredient Details and Substitutions
- Flour: I typically use organic unbleached all-purpose flour because it’s super cheap at Costco. However, if you want to use a different flour, I’m sure they would be delicious. To make these waffles gluten-free, just replace the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend, and make sure you use a gluten-free vegan chicken.
- Chickpea Flour: Chickpea flour is also known as garbanzo flour. Another option is to use fava chickpea flour. This ingredient mainly adds protein and nutrition, so if you don’t have it, you can replace it with additional all-purpose flour.
- Baking Powder: I like to buy non-aluminum baking powder, but you can use whatever kind you have.
- Spices: All the spices are just recommendations. You can mix and match whichever spices you like. You can also add freshly minced garlic in place of the garlic powder if you prefer.
- Vegan Yogurt: I use my homemade vegan yogurt because it saves a lot of money to make it yourself, but you can use any store bought yogurt, as long as it’s unflavored and unsweetened.
- Water: You need the liquid to get the batter to the right consistency, but it doesn’t have to be water. You can use veggie broth or unsweetened unflavored nondairy milk.
- Vegan Chicken: I recommend Karelyn’s Vegan fried chicken tenders because they use organic ingredients, they’re vegan owned, they’re black owned, and they’re a small business, and small businesses are the ones struggling the most right now. If you order from them, you can even enter the coupon code VeganDollhouse for 10% off!!! Atlas Monroe is another really good vegan chicken. But you can also just use whatever they have at your local Grocery Outlet or supermarket you normally shop at.
- Food Coloring: I used wilton gel colors for this recipe, but you can look at my entire list of vegan food coloring for other options.
- Sunflower Oil: I recommend using safflower oil, sunflower oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil for coating your waffle iron. However, if you have a spray oil, use that to save time and dishes.
- Food Coloring: I used wilton gel colors for this recipe, but you can look at my entire list of vegan food coloring for other options. dutch cocoa powder
